Mónica RiveiroLife Life has been my first experiment that has physically culminated in an artist's book. I have always been fascinated by artist's books and the book as an object. They stand out a bit from the everyday nature of a photobook (in this case).
Layout in a photobook is essential for creating a coherent and engaging visual narrative. A well-considered arrangement of photos guides the viewer through a logical sequence, highlighting key moments and creating a harmonious aesthetic. This not only makes the photobook visually pleasing but also helps maintain the viewer’s attention and emphasizes the most relevant images.
Additionally, a well-considered layout establishes a visual rhythm that avoids monotony and facilitates intuitive navigation. It maintains thematic coherence and enhances the user experience, increasing the emotional impact of the images. Overall, the layout ensures that the photobook is a cohesive and meaningful work of art that effectively communicates the author's vision.
However, in an artist's book, everything becomes very personal; the author pours all their creativity and soul into that object.
To convey a message in an artist's book, it is essential to have a clear concept and carefully select content, including images and text, that contribute to the overall message. Layout and design play a crucial role in guiding the reader through the narrative in a logical and emotionally resonant way. Additionally, typography and writing style should complement the visual content and reinforce the message.
The materials and techniques used, such as the type of paper and binding, add additional meaning and enhance the user experience. The reader’s interaction and experience, along with aesthetic coherence in style, color palette, and texture, are crucial for creating a cohesive and emotionally impactful work. Together, all these elements work in harmony to effectively communicate the artist's vision.
I had never created an artist's book before. I hadn't even imagined that I could do it or considered trying. However, I am the type of person who doesn't shy away from challenges. Questions like "What if...?" and "Why not...?" are essential for the evolution of a creative mind.
In this case, I wanted to bring this special experiment to life, to be able to touch it, feel it, and hold it in my hands.
Getting personally involved in creating an artist's book is fascinating. Exploring ideas, sourcing the right materials, selecting textures and colors for the fabrics, and choosing the type of paper for the photographs is an exciting process. Considering all these details is a lengthy journey, especially when lacking experience in binding. However, once the idea of what you want to create is clear, it is crucial to research how to bring it to fruition.
It took me three months to complete the entire process, and I thoroughly enjoyed every step.
This artist's book, along with its box, feels very personal to me. It holds the entire story of the experiment—a fusion of photography, music, and poetry. That's why it was important for me that it have three covers and close as if embracing itself. Finally, placing it in a box to unify the whole piece was the perfect finishing touch.
It may not be a perfect artist's book (does such a thing even exist?). In fact, it is imperfect. But it is mine, and it has come from my mind and my hands.
It's the first one, but it won't be the last.
