SELF-PORTRAIT
«Another gray and humid day. I was really looking forward to spring arriving in this corner of the world to go out and photograph the life flowing through the streets in good weather. On a day like this, few venture out for a stroll in the rain.
The humidity was seeping through to the bones, but I couldn't bear staying locked up in those four walls any longer, working tirelessly, editing images for hours to meet the deadlines.
I took my small camera, the umbrella, bundled up sufficiently, and went out to breathe in the fresh air and capture the images that the rain was offering me. Gray days, devoid of a color palette, also offer images that catch my attention. I shoot lonely streets fitting for a black and white look, bucolic scenes with low contrast, in tune with the day.
I get emotional.
Not long ago, I had heard a photojournalist, now recognized for her long career but forgotten by many, say that a photographer shoots with their heart. And a friend concluded the statement with "...and they aim for the emotions."
How difficult it is to capture all these emotions that a scene evokes within a frame, and sometimes, I wonder if I am truly capable of reproducing that spatial reality on a flat surface. And I also thought of that quote I had read a long time ago by Escher, "Admiration is the salt of the earth."
And so, lost in my thoughts and emotions, I realized that my feet were at the edge of a puddle. When I looked down, I saw my reflection in a water mirror, its image distorted by the ripples caused by raindrops falling. And Escher came back to my mind with his work titled "Three Worlds." And for a moment, I wanted to jump into one of those worlds, where my silhouette was outlined under an umbrella.
Her way of seeing the world around her and herself within it fascinates me.
Photography is a way to get to know oneself.
