Today I\u2019d like to reflect on something that concerns many photographers: how to find your photographic style without losing your own voice along the way<\/strong>.<\/p>

In other words, listening to ourselves\u2026 or stopping ourselves from listening.
Because when we take photos, are we truly looking within\u2026 or just worrying about what others want to see?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Let\u2019s be honest. Often, it seems that what\u2019s expected of us is pretty clear: beautiful images, easy to look at, easy to understand. Comfortable photographs. Ones that don\u2019t challenge too much or make people think too deeply.<\/p>

And then likes<\/strong> come into play<\/p>

Social media sends us a very simple message: the more likes you get, the more popular you are. At least according to the algorithm, that mysterious creature with a terrible sense of humor.<\/p>

The problem is that this message, repeated thousands of times, ends up creating a serious dependency. Before we know it, we start producing images not for ourselves, but to please others.<\/p>

And that\u2019s when the great enemy appears.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I\u2019m sure it\u2019s happened to you. You\u2019re in front of your computer, looking for a photo to post on social media, and the dilemma appears:<\/p>

Do I post this image that may not be the most beautiful, but means so much to me?<\/p>

Or do I post this other photo, the one that\u2019s sure to get more likes\u2026 and delight the algorithm?<\/p>

We\u2019ve all had that moment.<\/p>

The problem is that if this process repeats over a long time, something curious happens: you start to empty yourself<\/strong>. Little by little, we stop making our own decisions. Our choices begin to depend on what we think others expect from us.<\/p>

We want to be liked. And that\u2019s only human. We follow trends in the way we dress, style our hair, even in the way we speak\u2026 Trends come and go, and often we end up looking too much like each other.<\/p>

The same happens in photography.<\/p>

Sometimes it seems like we\u2019re all creating variations of the same thing\u2014seeking approval, waiting for the verdict in the form of little red hearts.<\/p>

And when those hearts don\u2019t appear\u2026 we start questioning what we did wrong.\u00a0<\/p>

It\u2019s curious how something so small can turn into a little drug.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to remember something simple: we need to be ourselves<\/strong>. Embracing our strengths, yes, but also our flaws.<\/p>

Actually, it\u2019s frequently our imperfections that make us recognizable.<\/p>

Social media has brought many positive things, of course. But it has also introduced a healthy dose of insecurity. It influences us more than we realize.\u00a0<\/p>

And when it comes to photography, it matters a lot.\u00a0<\/p>

That\u2019s why there\u2019s a word that feels increasingly important to me: honesty<\/strong>.<\/p>

Sharing our own vision of the world.\u00a0<\/p>

Telling our story exactly as we want.<\/p>

Because if we don\u2019t, we risk falling into a rather absurd loop: we take a photo, edit it quickly, post it on social media\u2026 and wait for the flood of praise to feed our ego.<\/p>

And\u2026 then?<\/p>

Then we need another photo. And another approval. And another.<\/p>

A never-ending cycle.<\/p>

Until one day you stop and think: \u201cWait a minute\u2026 what the hell am I doing?\"<\/p>

And if we\u2019re truly honest with ourselves, the answer can be uncomfortable: this is no longer me<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

What We Can Learn from Vivian Maier<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Sometimes it feels like we enjoy the process of photographing less and the process of receiving praise more. And that\u2019s a dangerous territory.<\/p>

I think then of Vivian<\/a><\/strong> Maier<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>

A photographer who took thousands and thousands of images\u2026 and, much to the despair of any modern community manager, showed them to no one\u2014or almost no one.<\/p>

She photographed because she needed to. Perhaps as a kind of diary. She observed, walked, looked around, and captured mementos. Many of her rolls of film were never even developed.<\/p>

And still, she continued photographing throughout her life.<\/p>

Her work was discovered by chance (or maybe not\u2026 perhaps everything happens for a reason) after her death. Which raises another interesting question: was it right for the person who decided to show her work?<\/p>

But that\u2019s another story\u2026 perhaps for another post.<\/p>

What does seem clear is that Vivian Maier lived photography in a profoundly honest way<\/strong>. She photographed without expecting anything in return. Without expecting applause.<\/p>

And perhaps there\u2019s a small lesson here.\u00a0<\/p>

When we work on a personal photography project\u2014a series, a project, or even a single image\u2014we should try to close the door, at least for a moment, to all those external voices whispering to us what we should photograph, how to do it, or what\u2019s currently trendy.\u00a0<\/p>

In my case, many projects are born precisely from that inward search, as happens in The railing<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Going out to photograph alone can be a very healthy exercise. In The search<\/strong><\/a>, I reflect on that solitude and the search for one\u2019s own identity.<\/p>

Many photographers ask themselves at some point: \u201cHow do I find my photographic style?\u201d<\/p>

The answer may not lie in learning more techniques, nor in following the latest visual trend.<\/p>

Often, style emerges when we stop trying to please everyone and start paying attention to what truly interests us to photograph.<\/p>

What repeatedly attracts you, obsesses you visually, and makes you pause when you walk with your camera.<\/p>

That\u2019s when your voice begins to emerge.<\/strong><\/p>

Because in the end, the best advice remains the simplest of all: be yourself<\/strong>.<\/p>

Suena solemne aunque a estas alturas de la vida a\u00fan no s\u00e9 si fue catastr\u00f3fico y una bendici\u00f3n. \u00bfQu\u00e9 hubiese pasado si en vez de decantarme por la fotograf\u00eda lo hubiera hecho por la f\u00edsica? Quiero pensar que en otra vida me volver\u00e9 a decantar por la fotograf\u00eda, para bien o para mal. Por supuesto, por aquel entonces, la fotograf\u00eda era lo que se llama ahora anal\u00f3gica, con carretes, reveladores, ba\u00f1os de paro, rom\u00e1nticas luces rojas y olores a todo tipo de qu\u00edmicos menos rom\u00e1nticos. Jam\u00e1s en la vida se me dio bien el dibujo. As\u00ed que decid\u00ed probar suerte a ingresar en La Escuela de Arte de Oviedo y estudiar fotograf\u00eda. Las pruebas de ingreso requer\u00edan pasar unos ex\u00e1menes de historia del arte. Pero tambi\u00e9n pasar una prueba de dibujo. Era la primera vez en mi vida que ten\u00eda una caballete de pintura delante de mis narices. A pocos metros la examinadora dispuso un bodeg\u00f3n de frutas a su antojo. -Ten\u00e9is que reinterpretar este bodeg\u00f3n,- espet\u00f3. Yo no sab\u00eda si dejar el lienzo en blanco y largarme o probar suerte a ver si sonaba la flauta. Opt\u00e9 por esta \u00faltima consideraci\u00f3n. Eleg\u00ed la t\u00e9cnica abstracta. La flauta no debi\u00f3 de sonar. Mi reinterpretaci\u00f3n del bodeg\u00f3n con esta t\u00e9cnica no debi\u00f3 de calar muy hondo ni emocionar. Dar\u00eda lo que fuera por recuperar aquella obra de arte. Mi primera obra abstracta pintada. M\u00e1s que nada para echarme unas risas porque aquello tuvo que impresionar. Quiz\u00e1s me equivoqu\u00e9 de t\u00e9cnica. La impresionista hubiese sido una mejor elecci\u00f3n. O no. \u00bfQui\u00e9n lo puede saber? Tampoco supe cu\u00e1ntos, de los ex\u00e1menes que hice, aprob\u00e9. NO APTO. Puerta cerrada. Yo segu\u00eda haciendo fotograf\u00edas y revelando en mi casa en una especie de laboratorio que mont\u00e9 en uno de los ba\u00f1os. Varios d\u00edas a la semana y durante 24 horas aquel ba\u00f1o estaba inoperativo en la casa. Inoperativo para su uso tradicional, quiero decir. Tambi\u00e9n por casualidad, o quiz\u00e1s no, conoc\u00ed por aquel entonces a quien ser\u00eda mi maestro por muchos a\u00f1os (y lo sigue siendo). De su mano asist\u00ed a cursos de fotograf\u00eda en una academia privada. No fueron pocos (revelado, positivado, composici\u00f3n, retrato, sistema de zonas\u2026). A\u00f1os despu\u00e9s vendr\u00eda el contacto con la fotograf\u00eda profesional, code\u00e1ndome con fotograf\u00eda de prensa, deportiva, corporativa, de producto. Pero principalmente fueron unos cuantos a\u00f1os de fotograf\u00eda de estudio, bodas y comuniones en la provincia de Segovia. Y, por supuesto, llegar\u00eda la fotograf\u00eda digital a revolucionarlo todo. El hecho de dedicarme profesionalmente a la fotograf\u00eda hizo que descuidara mi fotograf\u00eda personal. Aunque no faltaron las salidas fotogr\u00e1ficas por las Sierras de Gredos y Guadarrama para hacer fotograf\u00eda de paisaje y macro, entre otras cosas.
