That phrase was pretty much a must on the cover, usually stuck next to some annoyingly persistent little heart.<\/p>

Those were the days!<\/p>

Today I want to talk about something I didn\u2019t know how to name for years: poetry in photography<\/strong>.<\/p>

But let\u2019s get to the point. What is poetry?<\/p>

According to the RAE<\/strong> (the Royal Spanish Academy): \u201cit is the manifestation of beauty<\/strong> or aesthetic sense<\/strong> through words, whether in verse or prose.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Alright\u2026 let\u2019s try another definition.<\/p>

If we ask ChatGPT, it tells us: \u201cit is a form of artistic expression that uses language in an aesthetic and rhythmic<\/strong> way to convey emotions<\/strong>, ideas, or experiences intensely and concisely. It often employs tools like metaphor, imagery, musicality, and economy of words to create a deep effect on the reader or listener.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Alright, all good.\u00a0<\/p>

But then... how about poetry without words, made of images, that isn't \"read\" but looked at?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Beauty is not a quality of the things themselves: it exists only in the mind of the beholder, and each mind perceives a different kind of beauty.<\/p><\/blockquote>

If poetry has to do with beauty\u2026 then it\u2019s worth clarifying just what the heck beauty actually is.<\/p>

I want to bring Gotthold Ephraim Lessing<\/strong> into the scene. He said that the beautiful is not simply what pleases our eyes, but that which, through them, delights our imagination. In other words, art in its various forms (literature, painting, photography, music\u2026) shouldn\u2019t show everything, but leave space for the viewer to complete the emotion. That\u2019s where the real impact happens.<\/p>

Art isn\u2019t meant to serve everything up chewed and ready.\u00a0<\/p>

To leave space<\/strong>.<\/p>

Para dejar espacio<\/strong>.<\/p>

So you can complete the climactic moment in your own mind.<\/p>

And most importantly: the most powerful art doesn\u2019t show everything; it evokes.\u00a0<\/p>

To evoke<\/strong> rather than to narrate.<\/p>

To suggest<\/strong> instead of explaining.<\/p>

To hint<\/strong> rather than highlight with a fluorescent marker.<\/p>

That, I believe, is an essential part of beauty.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I confess: I used to hate poetry.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Now comes the awkward part\u2026<\/p>

In school, I hated poetry (among many other things).<\/p>

Yes... I confess.<\/p>

Analyzing verses, hunting for metaphors, dissecting literary devices\u2026 It all felt like torture to me.\u00a0<\/p>

I didn\u2019t understand a thing. Not a single bit.<\/p>

And when it came time to explain in class what the author \u201cmeant,\u201d I practiced the ancient art of sliding down in my chair to disappear among my classmates\u2019 heads. But of course\u2026 that gesture drew way too much attention.<\/p>

Back then, my thinking was simple: can\u2019t people just speak clearly and stop dressing everything up in metaphors, for heaven\u2019s sake?<\/p>

My mind was elsewhere, literally sailing other seas.<\/p>

And yet...<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

After rejecting written poetry\u2026 life\u2019s little irony\u2026 photography made its entrance.<\/p>

Buscaba belleza sin saber que la estaba buscando.<\/p>

And I found it both in what was aesthetically pleasing and in what was uncomfortable, rough, or seemingly ugly.<\/p>

Over time, I discovered something both puzzling and fascinating: I was trying to create poetry\u2026 with images.<\/p>

Sin palabras, ni versos, ni estrofas.<\/p>

Visual metaphors. Symbolism. Rhythm. Narrative sequences. Evocation.<\/p>

Exactly the same thing that used to irritate me in language class\u2026 but translated into a language I could actually understand.\u00a0<\/p>

And I keep trying. Sometimes my own images move me, and then I think that maybe, just maybe, I\u2019m managing to capture a bit of poetry.<\/p>

Does it make sense? Absolutely.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Photography as a poem<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

A diptych can be a verse.
A sequence of images, a poem with rhythm.
A photo series, an emotional structure.
Sometimes, though, a single image is enough to evoke so much that it becomes a complete poem on its own.<\/p>

There\u2019s no need to tell a complete story.\u00a0<\/p>

What\u2019s needed is to build a path toward an emotion.<\/p>

A visual poem doesn\u2019t explain: it suggests.<\/p>

It doesn\u2019t force you to feel: it opens the door for each viewer to feel what they need to feel.<\/p>

The images converse with each other, and that dialogue is the guiding thread toward emotion.<\/p>

That is poetry.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Leonardo da Vinci<\/strong> argued that painting served a purpose more worthy than poetry, because it represented the works of nature with greater truth.<\/p>

Jean-Baptiste Dubos<\/strong> maintained that painting held more power than poetry because it acts directly on the eyes, using \u201cnatural signs\u201d instead of artificial ones.<\/p>

What I do know is that when an image strikes you without the need for words, something deeply poetic is happening. Like when you hear a song and get goosebumps without really knowing why\u2014that\u2019s when something profoundly poetic occurs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

For many years, I took photographs without knowing how to name what I was doing.<\/p>

Now I understand: I was searching for\u2014or finding\u2014that moment when something stirs something inside you.<\/p>

It\u2019s an emotion you can\u2019t explain.<\/p>

To evoke<\/strong> rather than to narrate.<\/p>

That\u2019s the key.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Today I read poetry differently. Without fear. I understand it better (though not always) and I enjoy it.<\/p>

Maybe it wasn\u2019t that poetry wasn\u2019t for me, but that it was speaking a language I still didn\u2019t know how to translate.\u00a0<\/p>

Now I do.<\/p>

And it turns out I\u2019ve always been trying to write poetry\u2026 just with light.<\/p>

Until now, I had fragments of a poem not yet written; now I\u2019m piecing them together so they take shape in verses and stanzas.<\/p>

For years, I\u2019ve kept among my most treasured possessions a book titled Po\u00e9tica fotogr\u00e1fica<\/em><\/strong> by Lloren\u00e7 Raich Mu\u00f1oz<\/strong><\/a>. I\u2019ve highlighted it to death. Every time I return to it, I discover a new, sublime paragraph. (Yes\u2026 I highlight books with a pen. I have no respect for them, and I love it.) I recommend it to everyone.<\/p>

I recommend listening to this audio from the program Una Canci\u00f3n para un Fot\u00f3grafo<\/strong><\/a> on RTVE, dedicated to Photography as Poetry by Lloren\u00e7 Raich Mu\u00f1oz.<\/p>

And music? Isn\u2019t that also poetry and beauty? Surely it is\u2026 but let someone else write about that, right? A musician, for example. Aquel curso de iniciaci\u00f3n al revelado de fotograf\u00eda en blanco y negro en el instituto al que una amiga me pidi\u00f3 que me apuntara con ella fue el punto de inflexi\u00f3n en mi vida. Suena solemne aunque a estas alturas de la vida a\u00fan no s\u00e9 si fue catastr\u00f3fico y una bendici\u00f3n. \u00bfQu\u00e9 hubiese pasado si en vez de decantarme por la fotograf\u00eda lo hubiera hecho por la f\u00edsica? Quiero pensar que en otra vida me volver\u00e9 a decantar por la fotograf\u00eda, para bien o para mal. Por supuesto, por aquel entonces, la fotograf\u00eda era lo que se llama ahora anal\u00f3gica, con carretes, reveladores, ba\u00f1os de paro, rom\u00e1nticas luces rojas y olores a todo tipo de qu\u00edmicos menos rom\u00e1nticos. Jam\u00e1s en la vida se me dio bien el dibujo. As\u00ed que decid\u00ed probar suerte a ingresar en La Escuela de Arte de Oviedo y estudiar fotograf\u00eda. Las pruebas de ingreso requer\u00edan pasar unos ex\u00e1menes de historia del arte. Pero tambi\u00e9n pasar una prueba de dibujo. Era la primera vez en mi vida que ten\u00eda una caballete de pintura delante de mis narices. A pocos metros la examinadora dispuso un bodeg\u00f3n de frutas a su antojo. -Ten\u00e9is que reinterpretar este bodeg\u00f3n,- espet\u00f3. Yo no sab\u00eda si dejar el lienzo en blanco y largarme o probar suerte a ver si sonaba la flauta. Opt\u00e9 por esta \u00faltima consideraci\u00f3n. Eleg\u00ed la t\u00e9cnica abstracta. La flauta no debi\u00f3 de sonar. Mi reinterpretaci\u00f3n del bodeg\u00f3n con esta t\u00e9cnica no debi\u00f3 de calar muy hondo ni emocionar. Dar\u00eda lo que fuera por recuperar aquella obra de arte. Mi primera obra abstracta pintada. M\u00e1s que nada para echarme unas risas porque aquello tuvo que impresionar. Quiz\u00e1s me equivoqu\u00e9 de t\u00e9cnica. La impresionista hubiese sido una mejor elecci\u00f3n. O no. \u00bfQui\u00e9n lo puede saber? Tampoco supe cu\u00e1ntos, de los ex\u00e1menes que hice, aprob\u00e9. NO APTO. Puerta cerrada. Yo segu\u00eda haciendo fotograf\u00edas y revelando en mi casa en una especie de laboratorio que mont\u00e9 en uno de los ba\u00f1os. Varios d\u00edas a la semana y durante 24 horas aquel ba\u00f1o estaba inoperativo en la casa. Inoperativo para su uso tradicional, quiero decir. Tambi\u00e9n por casualidad, o quiz\u00e1s no, conoc\u00ed por aquel entonces a quien ser\u00eda mi maestro por muchos a\u00f1os (y lo sigue siendo). De su mano asist\u00ed a cursos de fotograf\u00eda en una academia privada. No fueron pocos (revelado, positivado, composici\u00f3n, retrato, sistema de zonas\u2026). A\u00f1os despu\u00e9s vendr\u00eda el contacto con la fotograf\u00eda profesional, code\u00e1ndome con fotograf\u00eda de prensa, deportiva, corporativa, de producto. Pero principalmente fueron unos cuantos a\u00f1os de fotograf\u00eda de estudio, bodas y comuniones en la provincia de Segovia. Y, por supuesto, llegar\u00eda la fotograf\u00eda digital a revolucionarlo todo. El hecho de dedicarme profesionalmente a la fotograf\u00eda hizo que descuidara mi fotograf\u00eda personal. Aunque no faltaron las salidas fotogr\u00e1ficas por las Sierras de Gredos y Guadarrama para hacer fotograf\u00eda de paisaje y macro, entre otras cosas. Y despu\u00e9s de tantos a\u00f1os me apetec\u00eda m\u00e1s expresarme y abrirme en canal para sacar lo consciente y lo inconsciente. Redescubrirme. Buscarme y encontrarme. Tambi\u00e9n por casualidad, o quiz\u00e1s no, conoc\u00ed por aquel entonces a quien ser\u00eda mi maestro por muchos a\u00f1os (y lo sigue siendo). De su mano asist\u00ed a cursos de fotograf\u00eda en una academia privada. No fueron pocos (revelado, positivado, composici\u00f3n, retrato, sistema de zonas\u2026). A\u00f1os despu\u00e9s vendr\u00eda el contacto con la fotograf\u00eda profesional, code\u00e1ndome con fotograf\u00eda de prensa, deportiva, corporativa, de producto. Pero principalmente fueron unos cuantos a\u00f1os de fotograf\u00eda de estudio, bodas y comuniones en la provincia de Segovia. Y, por supuesto, llegar\u00eda la fotograf\u00eda digital a revolucionarlo todo. El hecho de dedicarme profesionalmente a la fotograf\u00eda hizo que descuidara mi fotograf\u00eda personal. Aunque no faltaron las salidas fotogr\u00e1ficas por las Sierras de Gredos y Guadarrama para hacer fotograf\u00eda de paisaje y macro, entre otras cosas. Y despu\u00e9s de tantos a\u00f1os me apetec\u00eda m\u00e1s expresarme y abrirme en canal para sacar lo consciente y lo inconsciente. Redescubrirme. Buscarme y encontrarme.
