Have you ever taken your camera out for a walk as if it were your dog? I have.<\/p>\n

Yes, I confess: I\u2019ve gone out into the street with my camera as if I were taking the dog for a walk.<\/em> Literally. And I came back home\u2026 without a single photo. I didn\u2019t even take the camera out of the bag. That\u2019s when you realize that your faithful technological companion is no longer a camera, but a dog you take for a walk out of habit.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The other day I watched a video on YouTube \u2014sometimes, amid all the noise, little gems appear that click in your mind\u2014 on the channel of Miguel Marina (Miguelitor)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>

He was talking about something that has happened to me and, I\u2019m sure, to many photographers as well.\u00a0<\/p>

It starts with a direct, piercing question: How many times have we gone out to take photos without any motivation<\/strong>?<\/p>

In my case, many times\u2014too many. It has happened to me, and it still happens today. We\u2019re human, not machines. Fortunately.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Yes. It has happened to me. I\u2019ve tried to fight this boredom in a thousand ways, searching for solutions and magic formulas to try to get unstuck<\/strong>. Changing cameras, for example. Among my three technological loves: Nikon, Sony, and Olympus (yes, I know Olympus is now called OM System, but for me, it will always be Olympus\u2014what a beautiful name).<\/p>

The Nikon D750<\/strong> with its 24-70mm f\/2.8 lens weighs as much as a brick. The result: few photos, nothing new, chronic back and neck pain, and an irresistible urge to get home, drop the \u201cbrick,\u201d and lie down.<\/p>

The Sony A7 IV<\/strong> is lighter, yes, but with two lenses and the backpack on my shoulder, I end up using just one\u2026 out of pure laziness to switch lenses.<\/p>

The Olympus Pen F<\/strong>, small, elegant, and practical, becomes my ally in the city. Lightweight and easy to carry. But even it isn\u2019t always enough to find a purpose behind the viewfinder.<\/p>

Having a camera of the right weight and size isn\u2019t enough to go out and find the perfect shot. Everything seems the same: the same faces, the same streets, the little corners visited a hundred thousand times.\u00a0<\/p>

And that\u2019s when the emergency creative games begin: filters, slow shutter speeds, double exposures\u2026 All that\u2019s missing is throwing it in the air with the timer on and hoping inspiration comes down by gravity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Here\u2019s a secret<\/strong>: if you go out thinking about the perfect photo<\/em>, you\u2019re already suffering before you even start. The anxiety of filling your memory card with \u201cgood\u201d images burns any spark of creativity even before you lift the camera.<\/p>\n

For a long time, I thought what I had was a creative block<\/strong>. Now I know that\u2019s not it. What I had was visual overload<\/strong>, an excess<\/strong> of images<\/strong> accumulated in my mind, and a constant anxiety<\/strong> about taking good photos every day, about finding a scene around every corner. And that\u2019s exhausting. Very much so.<\/p>\n

The real problem is expectations. Going out in search of that perfect photo is the fastest and most effective way to kill your creativity. Because it doesn\u2019t come. And when it doesn\u2019t come, frustration appears. Creative burnout<\/strong>. That point where even taking the camera out of the bag feels like a disproportionate physical and mental effort.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

When I travel, the pressure multiplies. Every city is a challenge, a showcase of photographic opportunities\u2026 and the truth is, the first shots almost always end up in the trash.<\/p>

The first day almost always goes the same way: I take out the camera late, and when I finally do, I go into machine-gun mode<\/strong>. Too many stimuli, too many streets, too many \u201cinteresting\u201d scenes. I shoot everything that moves, everything that doesn\u2019t move, and everything that might<\/em> move. Zero judgment. Zero standards. Pure tourist syndrome<\/strong>. Monuments, pretty streets, obvious reflections\u2026 the full clich\u00e9 package.<\/p>

The city overwhelms me, I don\u2019t filter, and the result is a visual overdose in record time. By the end of the day, my memory card is full\u2026 and I have the uncomfortable feeling that I haven\u2019t said a single thing with any photo. You can shoot thousands of times and not have truly seen a single one.<\/p>

Over time, I\u2019ve learned that cities need to be listened to. To walk without a camera, to get a little lost, to let the noise settle. Only when the chaos organizes itself in your mind does the camera regain its meaning. Until then, everything is just visual noise in the shape of a photograph.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I realized all of this when I returned to Dublin after 32 years. I went back with the pressure to photograph it \u201cwell,\u201d this time with experience, with a trained eye, and with the fear that my memory might betray me. On the first day, I didn\u2019t even take the camera out of the bag. I simply walked, observed, and reconnected with the places that remained unchanged in my memory from my student days. I needed to reconnect with the city, to listen to it, to feel it.<\/p>\n

The next day, with the camera already hanging around my neck, I didn\u2019t know where to start. I didn\u2019t want to fall into the obvious, the easy postcard shots. And it was only when I stopped that I realized the city had a pulse. That\u2019s how ECM<\/strong><\/a> was born. And also the confirmation of something I had already sensed: before shooting, you need to give yourself time to look and truly recognize the place in front of you.<\/p>\n

Motivation<\/strong> doesn\u2019t come from pressure or expectations. It comes when you slow down, when you truly look, and let the world surprise you in any corner. And if it happens without taking any photos\u2026 don\u2019t worry. You have to enjoy it. Wait. Because when that click<\/em> finally happens\u2014first in your mind, then in your heart\u2014then yes: you lift the camera\u2026 and shoot.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Suena solemne aunque a estas alturas de la vida a\u00fan no s\u00e9 si fue catastr\u00f3fico y una bendici\u00f3n. \u00bfQu\u00e9 hubiese pasado si en vez de decantarme por la fotograf\u00eda lo hubiera hecho por la f\u00edsica? Quiero pensar que en otra vida me volver\u00e9 a decantar por la fotograf\u00eda, para bien o para mal. Por supuesto, por aquel entonces, la fotograf\u00eda era lo que se llama ahora anal\u00f3gica, con carretes, reveladores, ba\u00f1os de paro, rom\u00e1nticas luces rojas y olores a todo tipo de qu\u00edmicos menos rom\u00e1nticos. Jam\u00e1s en la vida se me dio bien el dibujo. As\u00ed que decid\u00ed probar suerte a ingresar en La Escuela de Arte de Oviedo y estudiar fotograf\u00eda. Las pruebas de ingreso requer\u00edan pasar unos ex\u00e1menes de historia del arte. Pero tambi\u00e9n pasar una prueba de dibujo. Era la primera vez en mi vida que ten\u00eda una caballete de pintura delante de mis narices. A pocos metros la examinadora dispuso un bodeg\u00f3n de frutas a su antojo. -Ten\u00e9is que reinterpretar este bodeg\u00f3n,- espet\u00f3. Yo no sab\u00eda si dejar el lienzo en blanco y largarme o probar suerte a ver si sonaba la flauta. Opt\u00e9 por esta \u00faltima consideraci\u00f3n. Eleg\u00ed la t\u00e9cnica abstracta. La flauta no debi\u00f3 de sonar. Mi reinterpretaci\u00f3n del bodeg\u00f3n con esta t\u00e9cnica no debi\u00f3 de calar muy hondo ni emocionar. Dar\u00eda lo que fuera por recuperar aquella obra de arte. Mi primera obra abstracta pintada. M\u00e1s que nada para echarme unas risas porque aquello tuvo que impresionar. Quiz\u00e1s me equivoqu\u00e9 de t\u00e9cnica. La impresionista hubiese sido una mejor elecci\u00f3n. O no. \u00bfQui\u00e9n lo puede saber? Tampoco supe cu\u00e1ntos, de los ex\u00e1menes que hice, aprob\u00e9. NO APTO. Puerta cerrada. Yo segu\u00eda haciendo fotograf\u00edas y revelando en mi casa en una especie de laboratorio que mont\u00e9 en uno de los ba\u00f1os. Varios d\u00edas a la semana y durante 24 horas aquel ba\u00f1o estaba inoperativo en la casa. Inoperativo para su uso tradicional, quiero decir. Tambi\u00e9n por casualidad, o quiz\u00e1s no, conoc\u00ed por aquel entonces a quien ser\u00eda mi maestro por muchos a\u00f1os (y lo sigue siendo). De su mano asist\u00ed a cursos de fotograf\u00eda en una academia privada. No fueron pocos (revelado, positivado, composici\u00f3n, retrato, sistema de zonas\u2026). A\u00f1os despu\u00e9s vendr\u00eda el contacto con la fotograf\u00eda profesional, code\u00e1ndome con fotograf\u00eda de prensa, deportiva, corporativa, de producto. Pero principalmente fueron unos cuantos a\u00f1os de fotograf\u00eda de estudio, bodas y comuniones en la provincia de Segovia. Y, por supuesto, llegar\u00eda la fotograf\u00eda digital a revolucionarlo todo. El hecho de dedicarme profesionalmente a la fotograf\u00eda hizo que descuidara mi fotograf\u00eda personal. Aunque no faltaron las salidas fotogr\u00e1ficas por las Sierras de Gredos y Guadarrama para hacer fotograf\u00eda de paisaje y macro, entre otras cosas.
