I recently listened to a conversation with Tomasz Trezebiatowski<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>, editor of Frames Magazine<\/strong><\/a>, featuring a photographer I hadn\u2019t known before: Yasuhiro Ogawa<\/strong><\/a>. Almost from the very first minute, he said something that made me raise an eyebrow (the left one\u2014the one that goes up when something really matters to me): \u201cThere is no intentionality<\/strong> in my images. I simply create my own world<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

And that\u2019s when I thought: Okay, I\u2019m not alone in this.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I completely connect with that idea. My relationship with photography is very much like what Ogawa describes. Every time I try to be intentional, to \u201cdo something\u201d or not let myself go, I mess things up even more<\/strong>. More mistakes, more noise, less truth.<\/p>

I don\u2019t visualize, I don\u2019t plan, I don\u2019t construct a mental scene beforehand. Rather, I recognize or intuit something<\/a><\/strong>. Something I can\u2019t fully explain, something I can\u2019t put into words, yet I know it\u2019s there. And it\u2019s that recognition that drives me to take the photograph.<\/p>

And if I think about it a little more\u2014no tricks\u2014I don\u2019t believe I\u2019m consciously constructing an \u201cinner world.\u00a0<\/p>

At least not deliberately<\/strong>.<\/p>

I rather suspect that this world already exists, and I\u2019m simply leaving a crack for it to come through. In the form of a photograph.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

WHEN THE UNCONSCIOUS TAKES THE SHOT<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

This is where the big invisible boss comes into play: the unconscious<\/strong>.<\/p>

That voice that doesn\u2019t ask for permission and, every now and then, decides to speak. In my case, it speaks through images.<\/p>

Sometimes I look at photographs I took a week, a month, or a year ago, and something curious happens: I discover codes, interpretations, meanings that at the time I didn\u2019t see<\/strong>, only intuited<\/strong>.<\/p>

And they surprise me. Because they seem to know more about me than I did when I pressed the shutter.\u00a0<\/p>

That\u2019s when I realize that many photographs aren\u2019t ideas, but intuitions<\/strong>.<\/p>

Things that emerge without warning and, over time, reveal themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Today I can say\u2014without dramatics (but with complete honesty)\u2014that I use photography to know myself better<\/strong>.<\/p>

After many years of photographing, I\u2019ve come to this conclusion. Sometimes my images speak to me. They tell me things about myself that I hadn\u2019t yet articulated. I rediscover myself.<\/p>

And the most unsettling part is that I\u2019m telling it to myself<\/strong>, without even knowing it.<\/p>

Everything comes from within.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

And then social media arrives. That marvelous circus of dopamine, instant approval, and external validation shaped like a heart.\u00a0<\/p>

We live exposed. We post. We wait. And many times\u2014yes, even photographers\u2014we fall into the trap of uploading an image thinking more about whether people will like it than about what it has told us.<\/p>

Because likes boost our self-esteem.<\/p>

And dopamine.<\/p>

And a little bit of the ego.<\/p>

And yes, it\u2019s addictive. Like a legal, no-prescription drug.<\/p>

We want more. Always more.\u00a0<\/p>

And of course, the inevitable happens: you upload a photograph that feels special, intimate, important to you\u2026 and it gets four likes (one from the clueless algorithm).\u00a0<\/p>

Photographing to please is a slow, elegant way to disappear. It forces you to appeal instead of feel, and it silences the unconscious just when it has something to say.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Then comes the doubt: Did I fail? Was the image not that good?<\/em><\/p>

It has happened to me. I\u2019ve even gone as far as to discard images<\/strong> because they didn\u2019t get the \u201cexpected\u201d response.<\/p>

Mistake. Big mistake.\u00a0<\/p>

That an image gets few likes doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s bad. Many times, it means exactly the opposite.<\/p>

We live in a fast, frantic world, where we look but don\u2019t see<\/strong>.<\/p>

Where we don\u2019t pause long enough to cross that boundary between looking and seeing.\u00a0<\/p>

There\u2019s no time, and what usually emerges is indifference.<\/p>

The immediate works. The obvious. What doesn\u2019t require effort.<\/p>

Sunsets are the best example: post one (better without reflective text\u2014it just gets in the way) and get ready to receive digital applause for hours.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

But some images don\u2019t work that way.<\/p>

Images that are intimate, that ask for a pause, that need to be read like a short poem or a dense paragraph in a book.\u00a0<\/p>

And of course, that\u2019s not very viral.\u00a0<\/p>

However, when that connection happens\u2014when someone stops, looks, feels\u2014that is worth infinitely more than a hundred automatic likes.\u00a0<\/p>

Because it means someone has resonated on your same frequency<\/strong>.<\/p>

That the message has reached them.<\/p>

Or that a different one has arrived, but just as profound.<\/p>

And that\u2019s what truly matters.\u00a0<\/p>

We mustn\u2019t forget something fundamental: we photograph for ourselves<\/strong><\/a>, not for others.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

It\u2019s not about digging through your archive for the photo that fits the latest trend just to earn some bragging rights. Because, let\u2019s be honest, many times the more trivial the image, the more interactions it gets<\/strong>.<\/p>

There\u2019s usually not much expectation from viewers. We look quickly, react quickly, and move on.\u00a0<\/p>

But when you come across a work that is the construction of an inner world, it\u2019s like reading an autobiography.<\/p>

Even though each reader builds their own.\u00a0<\/p>

Because those images\u2014the ones that emerge from the author\u2019s unconscious\u2014activate the viewer\u2019s unconscious.\u00a0<\/p>

And that\u2019s where different worlds are born.\u00a0<\/p>

As many as there are people looking.<\/p>

If we see suffering, happiness, or torment in an image, perhaps what we\u2019re seeing is our own. Photography doesn\u2019t just show the author\u2014it also reflects us back.<\/p>

And that\u2026 even if it doesn\u2019t get likes\u2026 is profoundly valuable.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Suena solemne aunque a estas alturas de la vida a\u00fan no s\u00e9 si fue catastr\u00f3fico y una bendici\u00f3n. \u00bfQu\u00e9 hubiese pasado si en vez de decantarme por la fotograf\u00eda lo hubiera hecho por la f\u00edsica? Quiero pensar que en otra vida me volver\u00e9 a decantar por la fotograf\u00eda, para bien o para mal. Por supuesto, por aquel entonces, la fotograf\u00eda era lo que se llama ahora anal\u00f3gica, con carretes, reveladores, ba\u00f1os de paro, rom\u00e1nticas luces rojas y olores a todo tipo de qu\u00edmicos menos rom\u00e1nticos. Jam\u00e1s en la vida se me dio bien el dibujo. As\u00ed que decid\u00ed probar suerte a ingresar en La Escuela de Arte de Oviedo y estudiar fotograf\u00eda. Las pruebas de ingreso requer\u00edan pasar unos ex\u00e1menes de historia del arte. Pero tambi\u00e9n pasar una prueba de dibujo. Era la primera vez en mi vida que ten\u00eda una caballete de pintura delante de mis narices. A pocos metros la examinadora dispuso un bodeg\u00f3n de frutas a su antojo. -Ten\u00e9is que reinterpretar este bodeg\u00f3n,- espet\u00f3. Yo no sab\u00eda si dejar el lienzo en blanco y largarme o probar suerte a ver si sonaba la flauta. Opt\u00e9 por esta \u00faltima consideraci\u00f3n. Eleg\u00ed la t\u00e9cnica abstracta. La flauta no debi\u00f3 de sonar. Mi reinterpretaci\u00f3n del bodeg\u00f3n con esta t\u00e9cnica no debi\u00f3 de calar muy hondo ni emocionar. Dar\u00eda lo que fuera por recuperar aquella obra de arte. Mi primera obra abstracta pintada. M\u00e1s que nada para echarme unas risas porque aquello tuvo que impresionar. Quiz\u00e1s me equivoqu\u00e9 de t\u00e9cnica. La impresionista hubiese sido una mejor elecci\u00f3n. O no. \u00bfQui\u00e9n lo puede saber? Tampoco supe cu\u00e1ntos, de los ex\u00e1menes que hice, aprob\u00e9. NO APTO. Puerta cerrada. Yo segu\u00eda haciendo fotograf\u00edas y revelando en mi casa en una especie de laboratorio que mont\u00e9 en uno de los ba\u00f1os. Varios d\u00edas a la semana y durante 24 horas aquel ba\u00f1o estaba inoperativo en la casa. Inoperativo para su uso tradicional, quiero decir. Tambi\u00e9n por casualidad, o quiz\u00e1s no, conoc\u00ed por aquel entonces a quien ser\u00eda mi maestro por muchos a\u00f1os (y lo sigue siendo). De su mano asist\u00ed a cursos de fotograf\u00eda en una academia privada. No fueron pocos (revelado, positivado, composici\u00f3n, retrato, sistema de zonas\u2026). A\u00f1os despu\u00e9s vendr\u00eda el contacto con la fotograf\u00eda profesional, code\u00e1ndome con fotograf\u00eda de prensa, deportiva, corporativa, de producto. Pero principalmente fueron unos cuantos a\u00f1os de fotograf\u00eda de estudio, bodas y comuniones en la provincia de Segovia. Y, por supuesto, llegar\u00eda la fotograf\u00eda digital a revolucionarlo todo. El hecho de dedicarme profesionalmente a la fotograf\u00eda hizo que descuidara mi fotograf\u00eda personal. Aunque no faltaron las salidas fotogr\u00e1ficas por las Sierras de Gredos y Guadarrama para hacer fotograf\u00eda de paisaje y macro, entre otras cosas.
