Sometimes color isn\u2019t a choice.\u00a0<\/p>

It wraps around you, pulls you in, and holds you tight.<\/p>

And all you can do is watch\u2026 and shoot.<\/p>

For nearly twenty years, color connected me to the world around me. Now I\u2019ve returned to my archive\u2014not to sort out images or do digital housekeeping, but to remember what was there and to feel again that little thrill that ran through me every time I went out into nature with my camera.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Although in recent years I have created a few small series in color\u2014some more experimental, others more conceptual\u2014I recently felt the need to look back. I dug into my photo archive, that place where past versions of myself lie dormant, to remember what I had done.<\/p>

And there it all was.\u00a0<\/p>

Storks bathed in the warm light of the sunset in the Sierra de Guadarrama.<\/p>

Endless fields of red poppies in spring.<\/p>

Snow-covered mountains in Gredos.<\/p>

Pine, chestnut, and beech forests in autumn.<\/p>

Dehesas transformed into yellow seas of flowers.<\/p>

Macro photography of insects and flowers.<\/p>

Rivers transformed into jewel-like ice at -10\u202f\u00b0C (what winters those were).<\/p>

From the magic of the darkroom to the thrill of color<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I began that period using slide film, and then\u2014no turning back\u2014continued with the arrival of the first digital cameras. I went from the slow, ritualistic process of developing black-and-white film to discovering a kind of chromatic perfection that, at the time, seemed endless<\/p>

And then the inevitable question arises: Why color? Why wasn\u2019t I faithful to black and white?<\/strong><\/p>

The answer is simple and not at all intellectual: because the beauty of the landscape hit me full-on, without helmet or brakes.<\/strong><\/p>

My arrival in the Sierra de Guadarrama, in Segovia, was decisive. Beauty awaited me just 200 meters from my doorstep, where an immense pine forest stretched out, ever-changing\u2014ochre in summer, white in winter. The beauty was right there, within reach, and so intense it was almost overwhelming. Color shouted at full volume.<\/p>

During that period\u2014especially when digital arrived\u2014I no longer had to carry two cameras. With just one, I could choose. And almost always, I chose color. Not because I looked down on black and white (which still appeared from time to time), but because the surroundings pushed me toward it. There was no escape.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

For many years I tried to remain faithful to color as I found it. Manipulating it felt like nothing short of sacrilege. Well\u2026 let\u2019s be honest: sometimes I pushed the saturation a bit too far. Okay\u2014yes. On more than one occasion, so far that the photos looked like they were taken on another planet. I think this has happened to all of us, and anyone who says otherwise is lying.\u00a0<\/p>

Even so, my intention was clear: to hold onto that first impression, that moment when you\u2019re left wide-eyed, spellbound, trying to take in the beauty before you.<\/p>

Those were also years of learning with digital photography and editing. The possibilities were enormous, but I wanted to preserve that initial thrill, that almost physical impact the landscape had on me.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

From that period, a ten-minute audiovisual remained, titled \u2018Aiming at Emotions, Shooting with the Heart\u2019<\/em><\/a>. A title I still consider spot-on today\u2014not just for back then, but for now as well.<\/p>

I recently watched it again, after a long time, and yes: it moved me. Color can evoke emotion too. I\u2019m not made of stone.<\/p>

And here comes the paradox.<\/p>

My first photography award\u2014first prize, not second or third\u2014came in 1995\u2026 right in the middle of my personal black-and-white phase. I had already been immersed in it for three or four years when one day I went to Playa del Silencio in Asturias, armed with a Fuji Velvia 50 and a tripod.<\/p>

That beach is magical. A paradise for photographers. Color and texture everywhere. I developed the images in a delicious Cibachrome (those prints on such vibrant paper seemed to have volume) and submitted one to a contest in my hometown.<\/p>

Bingo. First prize in color.\u00a0<\/p>

I hit the jackpot. First prize in color.<\/p>

From that point on, a long friendship with color began: awards in Segovia and one in Brussels\u2026 and a relationship that lasted many years.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Honestly, I don\u2019t think so.<\/p>

I still find beauty in color. It captivates me, stops me in my tracks, makes me admire it. Sometimes I even capture it with my phone, like someone holding onto a memory for later. But there\u2019s something that drives me to discard it as my main language.<\/strong><\/p>

Because color speaks of the world.<\/p>

And black and white speaks of me.<\/p>

They are two distinct stages, clearly separated in the way I am and feel. Color places me in the outside world, allowing me to show what surrounds me. Black and white, on the other hand, places me in my inner world. It\u2019s a stage of self-knowledge, introspection, a dialogue with the unconscious. Yes, also with those well-worn\u2014but inevitable\u2014questions of who I am, where I come from, and where I am going.<\/p>

On the other hand, whenever I say an almost categorical no to something, the title of that famous James Bond film comes to mind: Never Say Never Again. You never know.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

And even so, color hasn\u2019t disappeared from my work.<\/p>

I still return to it occasionally, aware that nature color photography<\/strong> was an essential stage in the way I see. It is present in some recent series that can be seen on my website.<\/p>

ONE<\/strong><\/a> is one of the most special. It emerged during an emotionally challenging period. The colors are altered; I am not faithful to them. It is a symbolic, vulnerable, and necessary essay.<\/p>

LIFE LIFE<\/strong><\/a> was born from something as simple as watching drops of ink fall into a glass of water. Red\u2014blood red, life red\u2014was essential. In the background, a song by Ryuichi Sakamoto, a poem by Arseny Tarkovsky being recited, four notes that felt like vital pulses. Color was not about aesthetics: it was meaning.<\/p>

Despu\u00e9s llegaron Nighttime Kaleidoscope<\/strong><\/a> and Lisbographies<\/strong><\/a>, explorando el movimiento intencional de la c\u00e1mara.\u00a0<\/p>

And now I am immersed in ALMA<\/strong><\/a>. A still uncertain, challenging series in which I work with desaturated, worn, soft, almost timeless color. I don\u2019t know where it will lead me. I try to push it toward abstraction, into a territory I am still exploring.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Detestaba asignaturas de letras. Con el tiempo tambi\u00e9n acab\u00e9 detestando las de ciencias. Afortunadamente, o quiz\u00e1s no, la fotograf\u00eda se cruz\u00f3 en mi camino en un momento crucial aunque vulnerable. Aquel curso de iniciaci\u00f3n al revelado de fotograf\u00eda en blanco y negro en el instituto al que una amiga me pidi\u00f3 que me apuntara con ella fue el punto de inflexi\u00f3n en mi vida. Suena solemne aunque a estas alturas de la vida a\u00fan no s\u00e9 si fue catastr\u00f3fico y una bendici\u00f3n. \u00bfQu\u00e9 hubiese pasado si en vez de decantarme por la fotograf\u00eda lo hubiera hecho por la f\u00edsica? Quiero pensar que en otra vida me volver\u00e9 a decantar por la fotograf\u00eda, para bien o para mal. Por supuesto, por aquel entonces, la fotograf\u00eda era lo que se llama ahora anal\u00f3gica, con carretes, reveladores, ba\u00f1os de paro, rom\u00e1nticas luces rojas y olores a todo tipo de qu\u00edmicos menos rom\u00e1nticos. Jam\u00e1s en la vida se me dio bien el dibujo. As\u00ed que decid\u00ed probar suerte a ingresar en La Escuela de Arte de Oviedo y estudiar fotograf\u00eda. Las pruebas de ingreso requer\u00edan pasar unos ex\u00e1menes de historia del arte. Pero tambi\u00e9n pasar una prueba de dibujo. Era la primera vez en mi vida que ten\u00eda una caballete de pintura delante de mis narices. A pocos metros la examinadora dispuso un bodeg\u00f3n de frutas a su antojo. -Ten\u00e9is que reinterpretar este bodeg\u00f3n,- espet\u00f3. Yo no sab\u00eda si dejar el lienzo en blanco y largarme o probar suerte a ver si sonaba la flauta. Opt\u00e9 por esta \u00faltima consideraci\u00f3n. Eleg\u00ed la t\u00e9cnica abstracta. La flauta no debi\u00f3 de sonar. Mi reinterpretaci\u00f3n del bodeg\u00f3n con esta t\u00e9cnica no debi\u00f3 de calar muy hondo ni emocionar. Dar\u00eda lo que fuera por recuperar aquella obra de arte. Mi primera obra abstracta pintada. M\u00e1s que nada para echarme unas risas porque aquello tuvo que impresionar. Quiz\u00e1s me equivoqu\u00e9 de t\u00e9cnica. La impresionista hubiese sido una mejor elecci\u00f3n. O no. \u00bfQui\u00e9n lo puede saber? Tampoco supe cu\u00e1ntos, de los ex\u00e1menes que hice, aprob\u00e9. NO APTO. Puerta cerrada. Yo segu\u00eda haciendo fotograf\u00edas y revelando en mi casa en una especie de laboratorio que mont\u00e9 en uno de los ba\u00f1os. Varios d\u00edas a la semana y durante 24 horas aquel ba\u00f1o estaba inoperativo en la casa. Inoperativo para su uso tradicional, quiero decir. Tambi\u00e9n por casualidad, o quiz\u00e1s no, conoc\u00ed por aquel entonces a quien ser\u00eda mi maestro por muchos a\u00f1os (y lo sigue siendo). De su mano asist\u00ed a cursos de fotograf\u00eda en una academia privada. No fueron pocos (revelado, positivado, composici\u00f3n, retrato, sistema de zonas\u2026). A\u00f1os despu\u00e9s vendr\u00eda el contacto con la fotograf\u00eda profesional, code\u00e1ndome con fotograf\u00eda de prensa, deportiva, corporativa, de producto. Pero principalmente fueron unos cuantos a\u00f1os de fotograf\u00eda de estudio, bodas y comuniones en la provincia de Segovia. Y, por supuesto, llegar\u00eda la fotograf\u00eda digital a revolucionarlo todo. El hecho de dedicarme profesionalmente a la fotograf\u00eda hizo que descuidara mi fotograf\u00eda personal. Aunque no faltaron las salidas fotogr\u00e1ficas por las Sierras de Gredos y Guadarrama para hacer fotograf\u00eda de paisaje y macro, entre otras cosas. Y despu\u00e9s de tantos a\u00f1os me apetec\u00eda m\u00e1s expresarme y abrirme en canal para sacar lo consciente y lo inconsciente. Redescubrirme. Buscarme y encontrarme. De momento ah\u00ed estoy. En la b\u00fasqueda. \u00bfQui\u00e9n soy? \u00bfQui\u00e9n no soy? \u00bfDe d\u00f3nde vengo y a d\u00f3nde voy? T\u00edpicas preguntas existenciales de alguien que est\u00e1 en la edad de los 50. Ah\u00ed estoy. O quiz\u00e1s no. \u00bfQui\u00e9n lo puede saber? Por aquella \u00e9poca cursaba estudios de bachillerato y la decisi\u00f3n entre ciencias o letras ya estaba hecha y era efectiva. Ciencias. Detestaba asignaturas de letras. Con el tiempo tambi\u00e9n acab\u00e9 detestando las de ciencias. Afortunadamente, o quiz\u00e1s no, la fotograf\u00eda se cruz\u00f3 en mi camino en un momento crucial aunque vulnerable. Aquel curso de iniciaci\u00f3n al revelado de fotograf\u00eda en blanco y negro en el instituto al que una amiga me pidi\u00f3 que me apuntara con ella fue el punto de inflexi\u00f3n en mi vida. Suena solemne aunque a estas alturas de la vida a\u00fan no s\u00e9 si fue catastr\u00f3fico y una bendici\u00f3n. \u00bfQu\u00e9 hubiese pasado si en vez de decantarme por la fotograf\u00eda lo hubiera hecho por la f\u00edsica? Quiero pensar que en otra vida me volver\u00e9 a decantar por la fotograf\u00eda, para bien o para mal. Por supuesto, por aquel entonces, la fotograf\u00eda era lo que se llama ahora anal\u00f3gica, con carretes, reveladores, ba\u00f1os de paro, rom\u00e1nticas luces rojas y olores a todo tipo de qu\u00edmicos menos rom\u00e1nticos. Jam\u00e1s en la vida se me dio bien el dibujo. As\u00ed que decid\u00ed probar suerte a ingresar en La Escuela de Arte de Oviedo y estudiar fotograf\u00eda. Las pruebas de ingreso requer\u00edan pasar unos ex\u00e1menes de historia del arte. Pero tambi\u00e9n pasar una prueba de dibujo. Era la primera vez en mi vida que ten\u00eda una caballete de pintura delante de mis narices. A pocos metros la examinadora dispuso un bodeg\u00f3n de frutas a su antojo. -Ten\u00e9is que reinterpretar este bodeg\u00f3n,- espet\u00f3. Yo no sab\u00eda si dejar el lienzo en blanco y largarme o probar suerte a ver si sonaba la flauta. Opt\u00e9 por esta \u00faltima consideraci\u00f3n. Eleg\u00ed la t\u00e9cnica abstracta. La flauta no debi\u00f3 de sonar. Mi reinterpretaci\u00f3n del bodeg\u00f3n con esta t\u00e9cnica no debi\u00f3 de calar muy hondo ni emocionar. Dar\u00eda lo que fuera por recuperar aquella obra de arte. Mi primera obra abstracta pintada. M\u00e1s que nada para echarme unas risas porque aquello tuvo que impresionar. Quiz\u00e1s me equivoqu\u00e9 de t\u00e9cnica. La impresionista hubiese sido una mejor elecci\u00f3n. O no. \u00bfQui\u00e9n lo puede saber? Tampoco supe cu\u00e1ntos, de los ex\u00e1menes que hice, aprob\u00e9. NO APTO. Puerta cerrada. Yo segu\u00eda haciendo fotograf\u00edas y revelando en mi casa en una especie de laboratorio que mont\u00e9 en uno de los ba\u00f1os. Varios d\u00edas a la semana y durante 24 horas aquel ba\u00f1o estaba inoperativo en la casa. Inoperativo para su uso tradicional, quiero decir. Tambi\u00e9n por casualidad, o quiz\u00e1s no, conoc\u00ed por aquel entonces a quien ser\u00eda mi maestro por muchos a\u00f1os (y lo sigue siendo). De su mano asist\u00ed a cursos de fotograf\u00eda en una academia privada. No fueron pocos (revelado, positivado, composici\u00f3n, retrato, sistema de zonas\u2026). A\u00f1os despu\u00e9s vendr\u00eda el contacto con la fotograf\u00eda profesional, code\u00e1ndome con fotograf\u00eda de prensa, deportiva, corporativa, de producto. Pero principalmente fueron unos cuantos a\u00f1os de fotograf\u00eda de estudio, bodas y comuniones en la provincia de Segovia. Y, por supuesto, llegar\u00eda la fotograf\u00eda digital a revolucionarlo todo. El hecho de dedicarme profesionalmente a la fotograf\u00eda hizo que descuidara mi fotograf\u00eda personal. Aunque no faltaron las salidas fotogr\u00e1ficas por las Sierras de Gredos y Guadarrama para hacer fotograf\u00eda de paisaje y macro, entre otras cosas. Y despu\u00e9s de tantos a\u00f1os me apetec\u00eda m\u00e1s expresarme y abrirme en canal para sacar lo consciente y lo inconsciente. Redescubrirme. Buscarme y encontrarme. De momento ah\u00ed estoy. En la b\u00fasqueda. \u00bfQui\u00e9n soy? \u00bfQui\u00e9n no soy? \u00bfDe d\u00f3nde vengo y a d\u00f3nde voy? T\u00edpicas preguntas existenciales de alguien que est\u00e1 en la edad de los 50. Ah\u00ed estoy.
