\u00ab<\/strong>Actually, I prefer black and white. It\u2019s not that I don\u2019t take color photographs, but I\u2019ve realized one thing: color doesn\u2019t quite fit in my world. Black and white gives me a sense of distance\u2014a kind of distance from real life.
I believe that distance is very important. Real life is full of color. Black and white offers a sense of detachment. It allows the audience and viewers to find their own answers and provides the space and depth to reflect on and contemplate my ideas.\u00bb<\/p>

When I heard these words from Fan Ho<\/a><\/strong>, I had the feeling that someone had put into order something I had been sensing, photographing, and even avoiding explaining for years. That idea of distance\u2014stepping slightly away from real life to be able to see it\u2014not only defines his approach to photography, but also explains why black and white remains, for me, such a natural and inevitable choice.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the midst of the era of saturated, vibrant, and eye-catching color (that color that seems to scream look at me!<\/em> all the time), it can seem a bit unusual to fill a website or social media with grayscale photographs.<\/p>

Some people find it sad.
To others, vintage (which, interestingly, is now considered modern).
\"To others, poetic.<\/p>

And there are always those who try to psychoanalyze you based on the range of grays you use, as if that held the key to everything.<\/p>

My short answer would be: \u00abjust because\u00bb.<\/p>

But since one doesn\u2019t always want to go through life seeming rude, I have a more honest answer.
And, I warn you, quite a bit longer.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Real life is multicolored, chaotic, and noisy.\u00a0<\/p>

Black and white, on the other hand, introduces a slight distance\u2014the right amount to observe without being swept away by what we see. In that space, the important things happen: contemplation, reflection, and the possibility for each viewer to find their own interpretation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

How I Discovered Black and White Without Looking for It<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

I came to black and white<\/strong><\/a> by accident. And, as often happens with important things, once I had caught it, I didn\u2019t want to let it go.<\/p>

At first, it was the fascination with the darkroom: developing my own rolls, choosing films, developers, papers, filters. The slow and patient magic of the enlarger. Trial and error.<\/p>

The baryta papers.<\/p>

Those blacks.<\/p>

Those whites.<\/p>

Color was there, of course. I even went so far as to have equipment for color developing and printing. But black and white was always too tempting. When I photographed in color\u2014often with the legendary Fujifilm Velvia\u2014<\/strong><\/a> I felt that what I was communicating had nothing to do with who I was when photographing in black and white. It was as if I had to switch mental gears depending on the film I loaded into the camera. And that switch didn\u2019t flow naturally.<\/p>

For a time, I traveled with two Canon A-1 cameras: one loaded with color film and the other with black and white.<\/p>

The result? A jumble. Neither one nor the other. It wasn\u2019t me. Although sometimes it did work out. So I chose, and I stayed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Black and White as a Way of Seeing<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

What black and white gives me, color rarely does. Not because color is inferior, but because it doesn\u2019t fit with the way I see. As Fan Ho says, it doesn\u2019t fit in my world.<\/p>

We see the world in color every day. For me, it holds no mystery. Black and white, on the other hand, introduces dreaminess. Mystery. Depth. Because we don\u2019t see that way. Because it\u2019s a translation, not a copy of reality. Or perhaps a very personal interpretation.<\/p>

Do I enjoy a beautiful sunset with spectacular colors? Of course. But I prefer to simply contemplate it\u2026 or take a photo with my phone and keep walking.<\/p>

What interests me to photograph lies elsewhere: it\u2019s more internal, more introspective, more personal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

For me, black and white is silence.<\/p>

And it is slowness<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>

When I photograph in black and white, something takes me into a kind of internal meditation. Like putting earplugs in and listening only to your breath and the beat of your heart.<\/p>

The world stands still.<\/p>

Time stretches.<\/p>

I lose track of the hours.\u00a0<\/p>

With color, the exact opposite happens. My mind becomes too active. It scatters. It gets stressed.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Black and white doesn\u2019t simplify by removing color.<\/p>

It deepens.<\/p>

It silences distractions.<\/p>

It directs the gaze where I want it to go, not where color dictates. When color disappears, a new world\u2014imagined or fictitious\u2014appears, along with a completely different interpretation.<\/p>

I seek mystery. Dreaminess. What isn\u2019t seen at first glance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The emotions I convey are my own. I photograph because something moves me, and that is exactly what I want to show: my dreams, my fears, my desires.<\/p>

My images don\u2019t speak of others.\u00a0<\/p>

They speak of me.<\/p>

That is why black and white is, today, my signature style. I don\u2019t know if it will change in the future. I\u2019m not sure. What I do know is that right now it is the most honest way I have to tell my stories and to delve into myself.\u00a0<\/p>

As Fan Ho said, black and white \u00aboffers the space and depth to reflect on and contemplate my ideas\u00bb. <\/em>And in that space\u2014quiet, slow, and full of grays\u2014is where I feel most at ease.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Detestaba asignaturas de letras. Con el tiempo tambi\u00e9n acab\u00e9 detestando las de ciencias. Afortunadamente, o quiz\u00e1s no, la fotograf\u00eda se cruz\u00f3 en mi camino en un momento crucial aunque vulnerable. Aquel curso de iniciaci\u00f3n al revelado de fotograf\u00eda en blanco y negro en el instituto al que una amiga me pidi\u00f3 que me apuntara con ella fue el punto de inflexi\u00f3n en mi vida. Suena solemne aunque a estas alturas de la vida a\u00fan no s\u00e9 si fue catastr\u00f3fico y una bendici\u00f3n. \u00bfQu\u00e9 hubiese pasado si en vez de decantarme por la fotograf\u00eda lo hubiera hecho por la f\u00edsica? Quiero pensar que en otra vida me volver\u00e9 a decantar por la fotograf\u00eda, para bien o para mal. Por supuesto, por aquel entonces, la fotograf\u00eda era lo que se llama ahora anal\u00f3gica, con carretes, reveladores, ba\u00f1os de paro, rom\u00e1nticas luces rojas y olores a todo tipo de qu\u00edmicos menos rom\u00e1nticos. Jam\u00e1s en la vida se me dio bien el dibujo. As\u00ed que decid\u00ed probar suerte a ingresar en La Escuela de Arte de Oviedo y estudiar fotograf\u00eda. Las pruebas de ingreso requer\u00edan pasar unos ex\u00e1menes de historia del arte. Pero tambi\u00e9n pasar una prueba de dibujo. Era la primera vez en mi vida que ten\u00eda una caballete de pintura delante de mis narices. A pocos metros la examinadora dispuso un bodeg\u00f3n de frutas a su antojo. -Ten\u00e9is que reinterpretar este bodeg\u00f3n,- espet\u00f3. Yo no sab\u00eda si dejar el lienzo en blanco y largarme o probar suerte a ver si sonaba la flauta. Opt\u00e9 por esta \u00faltima consideraci\u00f3n. Eleg\u00ed la t\u00e9cnica abstracta. La flauta no debi\u00f3 de sonar. Mi reinterpretaci\u00f3n del bodeg\u00f3n con esta t\u00e9cnica no debi\u00f3 de calar muy hondo ni emocionar. Dar\u00eda lo que fuera por recuperar aquella obra de arte. Mi primera obra abstracta pintada. M\u00e1s que nada para echarme unas risas porque aquello tuvo que impresionar. Quiz\u00e1s me equivoqu\u00e9 de t\u00e9cnica. La impresionista hubiese sido una mejor elecci\u00f3n. O no. \u00bfQui\u00e9n lo puede saber? Tampoco supe cu\u00e1ntos, de los ex\u00e1menes que hice, aprob\u00e9. NO APTO. Puerta cerrada. Yo segu\u00eda haciendo fotograf\u00edas y revelando en mi casa en una especie de laboratorio que mont\u00e9 en uno de los ba\u00f1os. Varios d\u00edas a la semana y durante 24 horas aquel ba\u00f1o estaba inoperativo en la casa. Inoperativo para su uso tradicional, quiero decir. Tambi\u00e9n por casualidad, o quiz\u00e1s no, conoc\u00ed por aquel entonces a quien ser\u00eda mi maestro por muchos a\u00f1os (y lo sigue siendo). De su mano asist\u00ed a cursos de fotograf\u00eda en una academia privada. No fueron pocos (revelado, positivado, composici\u00f3n, retrato, sistema de zonas\u2026). A\u00f1os despu\u00e9s vendr\u00eda el contacto con la fotograf\u00eda profesional, code\u00e1ndome con fotograf\u00eda de prensa, deportiva, corporativa, de producto. Pero principalmente fueron unos cuantos a\u00f1os de fotograf\u00eda de estudio, bodas y comuniones en la provincia de Segovia. Y, por supuesto, llegar\u00eda la fotograf\u00eda digital a revolucionarlo todo. El hecho de dedicarme profesionalmente a la fotograf\u00eda hizo que descuidara mi fotograf\u00eda personal. Aunque no faltaron las salidas fotogr\u00e1ficas por las Sierras de Gredos y Guadarrama para hacer fotograf\u00eda de paisaje y macro, entre otras cosas. Y despu\u00e9s de tantos a\u00f1os me apetec\u00eda m\u00e1s expresarme y abrirme en canal para sacar lo consciente y lo inconsciente. Redescubrirme. Buscarme y encontrarme. De momento ah\u00ed estoy. En la b\u00fasqueda. \u00bfQui\u00e9n soy? \u00bfQui\u00e9n no soy? \u00bfDe d\u00f3nde vengo y a d\u00f3nde voy? Tambi\u00e9n por casualidad, o quiz\u00e1s no, conoc\u00ed por aquel entonces a quien ser\u00eda mi maestro por muchos a\u00f1os (y lo sigue siendo). De su mano asist\u00ed a cursos de fotograf\u00eda en una academia privada. No fueron pocos (revelado, positivado, composici\u00f3n, retrato, sistema de zonas\u2026). A\u00f1os despu\u00e9s vendr\u00eda el contacto con la fotograf\u00eda profesional, code\u00e1ndome con fotograf\u00eda de prensa, deportiva, corporativa, de producto. Pero principalmente fueron unos cuantos a\u00f1os de fotograf\u00eda de estudio, bodas y comuniones en la provincia de Segovia. Y, por supuesto, llegar\u00eda la fotograf\u00eda digital a revolucionarlo todo. El hecho de dedicarme profesionalmente a la fotograf\u00eda hizo que descuidara mi fotograf\u00eda personal. Aunque no faltaron las salidas fotogr\u00e1ficas por las Sierras de Gredos y Guadarrama para hacer fotograf\u00eda de paisaje y macro, entre otras cosas. Y despu\u00e9s de tantos a\u00f1os me apetec\u00eda m\u00e1s expresarme y abrirme en canal para sacar lo consciente y lo inconsciente. Redescubrirme. Buscarme y encontrarme. De momento ah\u00ed estoy. En la b\u00fasqueda. \u00bfQui\u00e9n soy? \u00bfQui\u00e9n no soy? \u00bfDe d\u00f3nde vengo y a d\u00f3nde voy?
